General Curriculum

The LatinSummer curriculum focuses on four main areas: Ancient Roman Culture, Greco-Roman Mythology, Conversational & Classical Latin, and Ancient Greek Language & Culture. Each of these areas is explored in a fun, creative, innovative, and hands-on manner. All students, regardless of grade level, journey through each of these topics. However the level of material varies depending on the grade level of the students.

For example, students in grades 1-2 are in a class composed solely of their peers with material tailored to their needs and interests. Students in grades 6-7 are in a similar situation, participating in activities more appropriate to the needs and interests of the middle-school child.

The bulk of the students in the program are in grades 3-5, and these students participate in mixed-grade, rotating classes. Each class focuses on one of the topics listed above. These students attend two of the classes early on each even day, leaving the remaining two to be attended on odd days. A short break follows the second class. Later in each day, students will explore a new topic in depth in an extended period. These activities will cover material beyond the scope of the four classes attended earlier in the day.

Assessment

Assessment is also an important part of the program. Through evaluations, teachers have an opportunity to comment on the achievements of individual students, and parents and students are able to appraise the value of their experience.
